Vinotok History

Vinotok isn’t only about saying farewell to summer and welcoming fall; it’s also a celebration of an abundant harvest. The quirky events of this festival originated from the tall tales of Eastern European immigrants, who were some of the earliest inhabitants of Crested Butte, CO.  Over the years, this festival became an annual occurrence that brought people together and cured their sorrows through healing stories. The event falls somewhere in between a Renaissance fair and a Pagan ritual, so you’ve likely never seen anything quite like it!

Vinotok Schedule of Events

During this festival, the members of the community show their graititude for their blessings through song, dance, and storytelling. The excitement kicks off with the Celebration of the Harvest Mother.  Other festivities occur throughout the week, too, such as theatrical performances and traditional dances. Nearly all of the productions depict the many Medieval-era characters of Vinotok (the Harvest Mother, the Earth Dragon, the maidens, the harvest lads, Sir Hapless, and the Green Man). Throughout the week, different characters engage in battle while the community watches eagerly.

The festival culminates with a final “Trial of the Grump,” during which everyone gathers for a ceremonial bonfire to sacrifice an effigy constructed by the town. Weeks before the celebration, “grump boxes” are placed around town made for people to discard their grievances on small pieces of paper. These thoughts are then stuffed into the “Grump” figure, which is later burned in a bonfire. As the Grump goes up in flames, so do everyone’s complaints. Talk about one-of-a-kind!
