Everything You Need to Know about the Peanut Lake in Crested Butte
Peanut Lake History
This area was once a thriving coal mine in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Over the years, an overabundance of coal mining waste steadily accumulated, making this area an unattractive part of Crested Butte. A great amount was deposited into the nearby Peanut Lake as well. Eventually, in the year 2000, one of these garbage heaps spontaneously combusted, creating a fire. It was then decided that this area needed to be cleaned up and preserved so it could be enjoyed by the community.
